  • Souffle' Pearls on the Half Shell

Souffle' Pearls on the Half Shell

It's been long enough that it can be easy to forget that brightly colored soufflé and metallic pearls were once a rarity.

Those wild colors and mirror shine come from this hybrid mussel.

Here is a brooch of natural golden "pipi" pearls from the Pinctada maculata and abalone pearls from the Haliotis iris.

My Kind of Gift - Vintage Mikimoto

I was reading an article about people not wanting to inherit their parent's or grandparent's furnishings and keepsakes. There is a growing distaste for "brown furniture", the kind of beautifully ornate dining sets I wanted to inherit when I was a little girl. I have to admit that I prefer the clean lined furniture I have now, but still, it makes one stop and think about how helpful it would be to clean out the clutter now so that others won't have a hard time of things when your time is up. Th...

  • Graduated Dreams

    Graduated Dreams

You may have seen some of the hyper-graduated strands of freshwater Chinese pearls that have been popular this last year. Betty Sue King of King's Ransom has an eye for choosing the most luscious pearls and these colorful metallic strands do not disappoint.

The almost drippy nacre had me fascinated and put me in mind of pastel hard candy. Betty Sue King, The Pearl Goddess, can be seen at the AGTA trade show in Tucson the first week of February. Learn more about Betty Sue...

    Leapin' Lizards!

Avi Raz has the gift of imagination and the incredible insight to see creatures in baroque pearls that few could conceive, much less conjure.

Here is a lizard with amazing details - multi-colored gold, gemstone eyes and a lovely pearl body. The lifelike texture of the skin makes you want to run your fingers over its bumps.

  • Natural Pearl Explosion

    Natural Pearl Explosion

This "Pearls of the Week" is from Dave LeBlanc. Dave is a researcher and owner-operator of Lagoon Island Pearl Farm near Tofino, British Columbia, Canada.

Most natural pearls form from damage to the animal, but some form as a result of illness. Dave postulates that epithelial cells that grow shell nacre may be prolapsed into the inner tissue forming nacre pockets in the body.

This "California mussel" (Mytilus californianus), displays masses of pearls due to auto...

  • Cibjo webinar/discussion on origins of gemstones
    by CortezPearls
Although it is not about PEARLS (but it may include them), some of you may find it interesting, so here is the information:

The origin of a gemstone, namely the geographic location at which it was extracted from the earth, has for years posed substantial scientific challenges to the gemmologists who are called on to make definitive judgements.

The current focus on supply chain integrity and traceability means that the concept of origin has expanded and is more relevant

  • New Bi-Monthly Column: The Sustainability Corner
    by CortezPearls
Hello dear Pearl-Guide.com Forum Members: With spring comes renewed energies and pulses, the recent system upgrade also allows me to start adding up content that we believe is necessary to keep the forum growing and renewed, making it the #1 Source for Pearl information on the World-Wide-Web for years to come. I had this idea of a column years ago, when I still published "The Sea of Cortez Peal Blog", which went "black" after a massive Russian hacker attack (the importance of updating your system...

Carolyn Ehret operates Ehret Design Gallery on eBay, a favorite of our members, and myself! If you find yourself having to wait for a car repair or a delayed appointment, I can practically guarantee that the time will fly by while you look at the fun items on her site. Of course, looking can be dangerous to your pocketbook. This is also a great place to find a few gems to add to a necklace or earrings--or just to source beautiful and unusual pearls. I had Carolyn add gold spacer beads and finding...

  • Pearls Make Me Feel Beautiful
    by GemGeek
Looking through photos from this summer, I noticed that all the photos where I am wearing pearls are the ones where I am joyous and glowing. Could there be a transfer of radiance from the pearls to the wearer? Can pearls fill the soul with visible happiness? I'm not sure, but I love my self-purchase of pearls from little h beyond measure.

Happy Blaire, followed by closeups of the pearls...
