It is odd. Something about the story is confusing to say the least. It just doesn't follow that those would go unfinished and unworn in a family with living, breathing, Indian women in it. I would really enjoy hearing more.

Hi there. thanks for your reply. The pearls are part of a rosary which i havnt included in the picture. Iv will shortly upload full picture of the tasbi (rosary) for u to have a close look. Do take a look at the beads, the alternate ones are of pure god and the rest are called mirzaan. These belonged to my wifes great great grandfather ( Mohamedali ).

I love it! More photos showing how they connect to the rosary, please! I do believe that could be the age you said and the use of the pearls makes complete sense. I really want to see more pix of the pearls in their proper context! They seem to hang. Can you show how that looks?

ooohh now it makes much much more sense! I assume those are 18K gold beads? Seeing the complete necklace i believe that those could be indeed 'basra pearls'.

    Quite a very beautiful necklace

Assuming the necklace is infact 150 years old, then the pearls are natural, and the orange beads are probably coral.

Get it professionally appraised, as it could be quite valuable.

Well, at least a couple of us thought they were natural pearls from the git go.

I am curious. Do people in India collect natural freshwater pearls? Are they also called Basra pearls? I am thinking that these are actually Basra pearls, meaning from the Persian gulf and therefore saltwater pearls from pinctada radiata.

That was a great lesson. I am so happy you shared this with us. It was like a game where we guess then you reveal the full context and all becomes clear.

It is obvious to me that that entire rosary is highly valuable and highly valued. I hope it stays in your family for many more generations....
