Default Over 3 Million USD for a strand of natural grey pearls with diamond clasp!

As seen via a link on a jewellery forum:

Hmmmm, don't like the colour much, natural or not!

The description sure doesn't give much background on the pearls themselves. Perhaps these are early naturals from La Paz, Mexico like the Sea of Cortez pearls I love so much, with all their marvelous overtones! Wish I had time right now to do some research.

They do look like Sea of Cortez. I see that characteristic pink and blue, not really seen in Tahitians. It is even more apparent in the big zooms. So, possibly Pteria sterna; they seem a bit too dark for most P. Mazatlanicas

    That clasp! It looks special!

According to the description, yes. It is a really unusual one- shaped just right for a clasp!

"Topping the sale in some style were the Cowdray Pearls, a necklace featuring 38 graduated natural grey pearls formerly owned by the Viscountess Cowdray, Lady Pearson (1860-1932). Estimated at £280,000-350,000, the necklace rapidly surpassed this valuation on its way to a stunning new world record price for natural grey pearls of £2.2m - 519% above its high estimate.

Each pearl set on the necklace has a unique colour as they are untreated rare natural saltwater pearls. The necklace is the perfect neck length at 43.2 cm long. The clasp of the pearl necklace is joined together with a striking rectangular mixed cut diamond measuring 11.4 -6.8mm."

I love having a natural necklace like that featured here! It is like several of Sea of Cortex naturals, but they are so large, the color isn't as intense, but it has the same range of colors, each one is different. Thanks, Dkan

Thought peeps in PG would like that.

I like the clasp too, however, the colours of the pearls just don't appeal to me.

yes, absolutely Caitlin - first of all I thought it was a hoax - but then I saw the provenance......

and from another age, with the roll-over showing all those marvelous imperfections, from before the time of cultured pearls ?

    that is some necklace

    Thanks also, Dkan
