You will need some way to polish after you have pickled. (that's a sentence you don't get to write too often!)
In most cases the chains are quite smooth, and the pearl, or pearls are not sliding back and forth all the time. I recall checking once and pearls and 18k gold are about the same "hardness"? But have not had time to verify that today.
What would cause wear, I feel, is someone like me, playing with the jewelry I have on, absentmindedly sliding the pearl back and forth on the chain; that would eventually cause wear!

Pattye - the constant fiddling that you describe is exactly what I'm thinking of! I know I'm the type to constantly be playing with the necklace. (For that reason, akoyas are probably not a good match for me!)
