    Default Searching for new sources

    Hi there

So glad I found this site - it has such a wealth of knowledge and I now realize how much I don't know about pearls!

I've just started a small internet shop selling freshwater pearl jewellery but as yet have only been able to find a good wholesaler for the more classic pieces and I'n now looking for somewhere to source the more modern 'funky' styles - baroque, lovely colours etc.

Can anyone advise me on this please

    TIA

    Welcome, Diana,

What country are you in; that might help us give you suggestions. Are you looking for finished jewelry items? We generally do not endorse specific wholesalers. Some of the forum members shop at the Hong Kong show for finished jewelry. Your spelling of jewellery makes me think you are in Europe or Australia?

    Hi Pattye

Yes you're right - I'm in the UK! I am looking for finished jewellery at this point (although at some stage might look to make some myself) The wholesaler I use at the moment is in China but doesn't have any of the more modern pieces - I've spent some time searching the net and so far haven't been able to find anyone.

Am not quite sure what kind of "modern" and "funky" kinds of jewelry you are wanting. You might ask the wholesaler you are happy with if they can work up some pieces for you based on design sketches you supply.

Some of the most unique pearls, such as the souffle pearls and high quality bead nucleated freshwater are in extremely limited supply at this time.

I think I'm looking for some of the more organic shapes and the lovely colours that are available now - maybe some longer length baroque necklaces in vibrant colours. I'm not sure that my wholesaler would be willing or able to do any commissioned pieces for me at the moment.

    Diana:

We have a special interest in baroque freshwater and saltwater pearls. I'd be pleased to help you with hanks, loose or finished product.

Hi - there are hundreds of vendors in the pearl markets in Shanghai and Beijing who will craft pieces to your designs, as well as sell finished pieces... maybe a buying trip would be in order? Many of these vendors cater to western tastes, and western retailers, and have a better aesthetic sense of what you might be looking for.
I used to buy from them regularly, now just have some things made up that I import for other wholesalers.
I haven't ever bought finished pieces at the HK fair, but there is a reasonable selection on offer there. Over time, I found that the best way to get finished pieces in the styles and quality you want, is to manufacture yourself. Tedious sometimes, and difficult, but worth the effort!
