Default The " If only" thread...

Ok, as we are celebrating Valentine's day, and I sit here cold and lonely because my husband went off to Kuwait for two weeks, leaving his poor pregnant wife alone in a foreign country. heehee

So, I decided to cheer myself up with internet pearl browsing...the premise being "How can he make this up to me?" Please note, this is for entertainment purposes only, I am not really all that sad and lonely. Then, it evolved in my mind to a "If only " list. In other words, I could kick my pearly addiction IF Only I had these strands.

So, I could PROBABLY kick my addiction if I had
    1) A double Freshadama strand like Jerin's
    2) A 16 inch dark lavender Freshadama strand (8-9mm)
    3) A deep gold SS strand, maybe 17 inches, AAA, round or drops
    4) A deep green/blue Tahitian strand, round, graduated, but unsure of
    size. Hopefuly from Josh.
    5) Silvery gray Tahitian strand, baroque shaped.

Now, I could probably kick the habit with only items 1,2, and 5. But the list keeps going. I think it proves there is no hope.

So, what is your "If only" list? Could any purchase stop the craziness?

Oooh great topic! If only... well, for me, it's if only $$ is not a barrier I would stop getting new pearls when I own:

    1.this multicoloured baroque
    2. Two Rings using this blue colour Tahitian and a red colour Tahitian in this thread here
    3. this gigantic white SS strand
    4. A rope of 6mm fw
    Wishlist: 13mm GSSP earrings

I, too, am left alone on Valentine's.

Told him not to buy me a card or candy. I don't need those things. But, woohooo, if only he had bought me this! http://www.pearlsofjoy.com/index.asp...ROD&ProdID=216

    Ladies,

you all show excellent taste in your choices! Sadly to say the addiction never ends and so we all are going to have a "IF-list" all the time!

    Have a nice Valentine´s day!

I would buy one of Dr Tom's pearls displaying water- specifically the one shaped like a diamond with a roundish shaped top half. It shows water all the way around the edge. It is part of a lot, so my chance of getting it is zilch-- so my motto: "If not, that, then better than that".

I found a slightly blurry picture of it. the more pointed side is up. From 5pm to 8pm it shows the translucency. The top half shows the nacre. As I rotate it, the translucency would stay on the bottom and the nacre would con tinue to be seen on the top.

Just in case anyone is interested: Nacre is made of "aragonite platelets, which usually have a hexagonal shape, ... embedded within an organic matrix" (Strack 2006, p121) Sometimes the organic matrix (called conchiolin) allows the edges to turn translucent and the aragonite platlets become prisms.

Although people have used the term "water" here before, nothing seen on this forum before exhibits "water" as it was used by bygone natural pearl experts like Tavernier. Sorry my pictures aren't better, but if I should ever get another chance to see such a pearl, I will take many more photos.

That is really something. Now, if we could only form some sort of buyer's group for that lot!

I'd like a nice 20" strand of Sea of Cortez pearls, with white gold or platinum rondelle diamond spacers.

How big is it? Attached were the loose pearls in our necklace 'Poe Io Mata Nui', for which a pretty special 14mm SS drop was chosen as the centerpiece, 'destroying' the otherwise natural-pearl theme. Wouldn't mind if the center pearl were slightly smaller as it so totally dominates the necklace.

Maybe we can explore that group purchase! (Caitlin, do you think Dr. Stern would entertain any 'Pearl-Guide' member rates?)

My completely unrealistic wish list (in no particular order):

    1. a necklace of big old wrinkly Kasumis (or the high end Chinese FW "imposters") - I just love those ...

    2. a really colorful Tahitian strand.

    3. a Sea of Cortez necklace or bracelet (although I was very much amused by the report of Enrique chiding Pattye for her "gluttony" in owning one!)

    4. a 10-11 mm multicolor Freshadama necklace

    5. a pin or pendant made with pearls from the sweet little unio in Caitlin's sig (I did say completely unrealistic, didn't I?)

    6. some nice klonks - I really like big pearls, and I still don't have anything that qualifies for klonkhood

and of course, the earrings to go with all of the above

Nah, who am I kidding - it wouldn't end there.... there are just too many pearly wonders out there to ever be completely satisfied.

That would be great! ... to finish the necklace off with a natural drop.

How about a pink conch that would only be barely larger, but would stand out mostly because of color (and perhaps mounting)?

On another thread in recent days I declared myself an NCN, pretty much relegating conchs to Tridachna equivalency (also there is the concern about color bleaching in sunlight). I do have a couple of abalones already that might be interesting in the right setting, but the jeweller would probably offer to buy back the necklace before we went in that direction!

What if pearls? That's a never ending list...

More realistically, I want my pearl chain soon, and something with blacks and red coral this summer - the red/black combination might be overdone (is it?), but it still is irresistible.

It would be great to have a ring with something natural... at some point.

How about a white Tridacna pearl or a pink conch that would stand out mostly because of their different nature and color (and perhaps mounting)?
