Is it spam if someone sends everyone a friend invitation?

There isn't anything wrong with making friends But what we want to make sure doesn't happen is abuse of the PM system. When soliciting and/or shilling happens via PM, this can only be monitored by the members, not the moderators. It's fine to do business between each other via PM, but anything unsolicited is spam.

Just for guidance...If someone posts 'I want x type of pearls or finding etc' and I have it in stock and waiting just for them...do I sit on my hands and keep quiet or can I then pm that information with a link to the item only. Assuming that posting a forum reply is a definate no.

Would that not apply to an ongoing discussion?

about a product or service that does not directly apply to an ongoing discussion
The PM system is an email system so the same rules of permission marketing apply. With the number of pearl sellers on this board, if the rules didn't prevent, people that posted questions about pearls would be inundated with private messages. There have been complaints about this in the very recent past, and it seems to be an ongoing problem. That's another reason why the rules were repeated above.

The spam PM I recieved, at the time this thread was started, was for something that I as a woman would have no personal use for, and that certainly was not related to pearls.

That particular spammer went through a lot of trouble messaging so many people. We are still trying to figure out how it happened so quickly as his IP address was banned within hours. I don't think something like this has ever happened before, so we may try to figure out a way to prevent new users who have never posted before from using the PM system. Currently all new member posts are moderated so it's easy to weed out the spam, and we do get hit nearly every day. But nobody sees these posts except the moderators. It seems the PM system is a way of attempting to get around those controls.

He doesn't even have to sign up to spam PM's. We have had this happen before. He can't receive any responses, but he can write PM's. This is a vulnerability of this system.

I have gotten many PM's from spammers who weren't approved yet.

Must say, this is the first in a very long time it has happened, and I greatly appreciate all you admin are doing to prevent and control it.

    Amen to that!

Hasn't Wendy's question/issue been handled by the vendor posting "PM me"? Or posting "how about this?". That's a legit way to handle it, right? By golly, I'd want to know if someone had what I wanted...

It turns out that MaximaxRR was able to send 187 spams through our system before they got banned. We are still working on a way to keep something like that from happening again, but we were able to figure out a way to delete all of the spammers actions, so hopefully that means every message was automatically deleted from member accounts.
