Default What do you do with a pearl shortener?

What do you do with a pearl shortener?

I have 3 gold ones from my mother, and she never used them. I'm not even sure how to wear them. I'm thinking of selling them, actually, unless someone can convince me how to use them.

They're roughly 1 inch long by 3/4 inch wide.

Don't really know how, have always wanted one though! I've seen them used to keep multiple strands together at the back ...

If you have a long strand, you can clasp one end closed, then twist the pearls and use this as a connector to join the two ends. You can use it to shorten a long strand. Let's say you want an 18" and you only have a 22". Put the necklace on, place the clasp in front. Grab either side and at 2" gather the strand together. Keep it closed (shortened) by using this to loop over both sides so that it cinches the necklace below the clasp. Close it up, turn it around and you will have a necklace that sits at 18". Of course this method requires that the gathered pearls be larger than the loop hole, otherwise the pearls will slide right over top. And as Cathy said, you can also use it to keep multiple stable when worn. Think of it like an unattached orbit clasp...I'm sure you will come up with many uses!

JP: These aren't that kind of pearl shortener. I know the kind you mean, which have a sort of dip in the middle to clasp the pearls and actually shorten them.

Mine are just big oval loops, sort of like for making a torsade out of rice krispie pearls. Anyway, I have them up on Diamond Bistro under Pearls, Cathy, wink wink wink.

If you have larger pearls, these will actually work as pearl shorteners just like the kinds with dips.

I think you'd need much bigger pearls than I have for that to work with these 3, but I can see it working.

I use this method to make a choker torsade out of an long endless strand of Amazonite chips. It's just the thing, when you need it.

I prefer the model on third photo, it looks like a full part of the necklace.

Yes, I like the 3rd version best for actually shortening a strand.

I think my 3 are more for making a twisted torsade out of ropes. Why Mom had 3 and never used them, I don't know.
