    Default Our Mother's Treasures

Inspired by BWeaves wonderful thread about her mother's jewelry collection, I thought I would begin a new thread where we could share special pieces or themes in our mother's jewelry wardrobes. My mother passed in 2011, and each and every day I miss her more and more...but each time I open my jewelry box, I discover new pieces and recall hidden memories that help get me through the tougher times, and celebrate the milestones, so it's as if she were here with me.

And now on to some of her favorite circle pins...IMG_2056.jpgIMG_2060.jpgIMG_2057.jpg

Nephrite jade pins...the one on the right is 22kIMG_2062.jpg

And some pearl pieces...this pair of earrings were a favorite. She had an entire Krystal vs Alexis wardrobe of jewelry (big, bold gold 1980s)IMG_2067.jpg These earrings are really much too heavy for me...I don't know how she ever wore them!

    And some others: IMG_2066.jpg

My photos came out kinda fuzzy today, but I promise the pearls have wonderful luster!

I'd love to see and hear others stories about their moms...with Mother's Day around the corner, I thought this would be a great way to honor their love of pearls and jewelry. Thank you BWeaves for the inspiration!

What a wonderful thread! I have most of my Mom's jewelry at the bank, but I do have a few pieces here. Maybe I'll get around to taking some photos of what isn't locked up

When I visited Australia, I of course had to get some opals. I got this one for my mother, and she had it set in a very simple, elegant setting. It is an opalized clam -- the clam shell got replaced by opal. You can see a hole in the shell where something drilled through it, probably with very bad consequences for the clam. The back is filled with sandstone from the sand the shell got buried in. When walking on the beach I picked up several clam shells that had holes drilled in them, so whatever it was is still active.

My mother didn't wear jewelry much, but this is one of the few things I remember her wearing a fair bit.

    Cool!

In Ashville, years ago, there was a shop that sold rocks. Really pretty rocks. They had a giant, what looked like, a nautilus shell that had been replaced by opal. It was a good foot in diameter. It was not for sale. It was gorgeous.

This is a very special thread. My other has advancing dementia and we have now placed her in a memory care facility. I sorted her jewelry late last year and put it in a safe. It was such an emotional experience touching the pieces that she wore and remembering her in them. She had been struggling with clasps and there were so many broken neck chains and earrings. It was so sad and emotional. She, like many of us here, loved her jewelry and it defined her with grace and elegance. I do have her "rice krispy" pearls and a small diameter pearl necklace which I hope to do something special with. Thanks for sharing.

Oh Pearly-Whites, I feel for you. It's so hard to watch your mother decline. Keep the good memories.

Pearly-Whites, I feel for you. My mother had dementia, too. It is a very difficult thing. Hug! My mother had a few pieces of costume jewelry that she liked. We took one of the very inexpensive necklaces to her to wear when she was in memory care. She seemed to really like it and kept reaching up to touch it. Of course it got lost, but she got some pleasure from it.
