    Default The JADE thread

As you can see the piglet necklace has this character engraved on it: 囍.
This stand for double happiness and is almost exclusively used in weddings.
The gold bangles, however, are also popular to wear during chinese new year, along with jade bangles.
I have a few, not NEARLY as many as the bride lol, but I do like to bust them out during Chinese new year and it is supposed to bring a year of prosperity and good luck!

Chinese people always say that a jade bangle either belongs to you or it doesn't since 3 criteria has to fit: 1) size has to be right (can't resize the bangles!), 2) price has to be right, and 3) you have to like it. My mom has a jade bangle that she got for relatively good value to the quality because it is so small that no one else can fit into it lol so the jeweler couldn't sell it to anyone else. I like it a lot too but sadly this one is in mom's no-touching stash.

That is a stunning piece of jade. I fear another obsession coming on...I love jade and pearls together.

What a colorful bangle! I was never much of a fan of jade but that might change my mind.

Lolol the concept of chinese people wearing jade bangle is that it is supposed to be snugged, so you baby-oil that thing onto your wrist and you don't take it on/off often. My mom can still take it off but do require some effort so she has had it on for a few years now (after I took the stock photo for her record keeping). So it is safely on her wrist even if I very much want to raid it from her!

The colors on that bangle are so very beautiful; glad it's safe on Mom's wrist Purranha. I'd never heard the baby oil tip before. Do you have your own jade bangle? What color would be your dream? I've always been partial to the light greens, but your mom's is dreamy!

Haha Cathy I actually do, however it was a mom hand-me-down after she acquired her current one, so I'm not in love with it but it is mine.
You can see that the color profile is similar, but phew the translucency is no where near her level.

I have a few light green ones - I bought them from a random seller who I don't think really knows what he was selling. I don't have any expert/official confirmation on the material, but I liked the way it looked. The bangles are translucent, with some flaws/inclusions. Some old artist placed some lovely gold bats to cover up the inclusions. Bat is actually a popular motive in chinese jewelry because it has the same pronunciation as fortune! They are sadly wwwaaaaayy too big on me, but the price was good and I liked the way they looked so I still grabbed them.

    Those are cool looking.

I think I would want my bangles a bit loose. The thought of having them on so tight that I couldn't even oil them off would freak me out.

I think the bangle can still be removed (using oil again) unless your hand has gotten bigger. I remember about 20 years ago, trying on bangles in Chinatown, San Fran and couldn't decide which one to pick...I ended up walking away because I couldn't decide...stupid me.

Kevin thanks the gold piggy photos and letting us hijack your thread.

Purranha love your mom's bangle and your own collection is also beautiful. Maybe you can get your bat bangles tested and see if it's A grade jade. There're in my favourite the colour combo.

I have a relatively large hand to wrist ratio, I'll need to be a hand contortionist for the bangle to fit my wrist! That thought would freak me out as well BWeaves!

Here's an example of my favourite type of bangle.

Uh, oh ... apologies to Kevin ... Ladies, do we need a Jade thread??? If someone starts one, I'll take a picture of my jadeite and pearl necklace Nothing fancy or terribly valuable, just light green jadeite, a few gold beads and a few very modest white cultured pearls, and I never wear it ...

    Thanks Kevin!!!

That purple and green bangle is gorgeous.

I'm also coveting Purrahna's mother's bangle, along with the engraved ones.

Ack, I don't need another vice.

I adore seeing these bangles. A bangle is out of the question because the ones that fit, look too big on me. Never thought to try oil!

What I really need is an oval jade bracelet!
