Another question for the experts about shifting nukes: is a pearl with a shifted nuke weakened at all? Seems like maybe the nacre could be susceptible to cracking or something...

Thanks, Sleight! That was my final thought before falling asleep last night. Nacre abrasion from the outside wear and tear and inside bead knocking around sounds like big trouble. Every bead I have seen and some pearls I've seen have as much as 1/4 of the bead showing, the nacre is set fast to the bead. Now I find out that isn't always the case. What causes the nacre not to adhere? That same organic goo?

Dear Nerida:
I logged in a took another peek at your pearls today. They are so awesome!
Good for your grandmother. Mine lived to be 96 and she was the best ever. She passed away when I was 18 and I miss her still.
She was the center and pillar of our entire family. Every birthday and holiday we all gathered in her house. About 50 plus people in two small rooms plus a large porch style dining room add on. She would cook and everybody had a great time. She loved telling stories to us kids. I wish I could remember if she had any pearls. She was the daughter of a cattleman in Houston, Texas, and he had oil and everything that that implied. But she fell in love with and married a farmer. She was fairly poor the last years of her life but she had a big heart and her home was always open.
Hugs,
barbie
Do you remember if your grandmother had pearls?
