Thanks! I knew they were different because of the way they form on the shell, but had never seen or touched one in person. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow in the daylight.

Do mabe pearls have the same gritty tooth feel as, say, freshwater pearls?
I have a ring with what has been called a pretty blue "mabe" pearl, but it feels very smooth.

Catherine Cardinelli just uploaded a beautiful purple necklace with pondslimes. I drooled over that for a while this afternoon...
Kelly, that made me laugh out loud!
Nice luster on those. I see a few that are a bit potato shaped, so my guess is freshwater pearls.
I like that the drop shaped ones are drilled "side to side" rather than through the pointy end. I haven't seen that before. Was it more common in the past?
Marnie, that's the very best way to purchase pearls, I think. See them, feel your heart pound, then go buy them. Love at first sight!
Sea Urchin, I agree! I'm thinking about learning to knot just so I can make myself a graduated color necklace. Random order is nice, but why must they ALL be that way?!?
Amanda, that ring is just stunning. That it also makes you think of your grandmother each time you wear it is very, very special. May you wear it in good health and happiness!

Great story! I went to your blog to read part two, and found I was holding my breath...
I agree this is a particularly interesting and pretty necklace. If you end up trying to sell it on eBay, please post the eBay listing URL here in case some of us want to bid on it!
Oo, what a bargain! That beats my latest find of a butter soft leather jacket for $15 :)
A truly gorgeous piece!
I don't think it is rude to post the prices, Adeline. It helps us newbies calibrate what things cost.
Oo, I saw that ring on eBay! I'm so glad to know that you bought it, Adeline.
What a pretty piece! It is great that you are creatively thinking outside the red velvet box to turn it into a pendant. I'd love to see the finished piece, especially if you can photograph it on your...
Lovely, just lovely!
Be wary of the phrase "more than 8 available." This means you are looking at a stock photo and not the piece you will actually buy.
Another tip is to pull up all items offered by the seller and...
I have a bracelet of the purple-green freshies, and I love it. The pearls are very egg shaped, but have so much luster that my eye looks right past that to the shine and color. My supplier only has...
The pin is really pretty! Before you list it at $99, you might try clicking the button on the left hand column for "completed listings only." Then look for ones that actually sold. Sold prices show...
Sigh. Your work is so beautiful, Adeline.
So pretty! Your smile in the last photo speaks volumes! :)
Michael, so glad this thread was helpful to you! Your ladies will be THRILLED with the Pearl Paradise necklaces.
I like big honking pearl studs! My problem is that the stud length is usually too long and pokes me in that tender spot just behind my ear. Ouch! I guess I have thin earlobes?
I usually just nip a...
