Hi Blaire,
I really enjoyed reading that article! Hopefully the freshwaters do not rise too much in price, so we can continue to treat ourselves with pearls of all kinds, shapes and colours

Good article and he seems to have his major facts correct.

Bazar estimates Tahitian production at approximately 5 million pearls a year. “If only 5 percent to 10 percent are fabulous, then that equates to 500,000 fabulous pearls,” he says. “Now if you're talking about the Cook Islands, well then you're talking about 500,000 pearls total production, and only 5,000 pearls that are really fabulous.”
Bazar continues, “What everyone should understand is that a fabulous pearl is rare. And that should be appreciated. The price of a fabulous pearl always stays high … and there are a lot of pearls that aren't as stunning.”

This was interesting to me. It reminded me of when Josh was commenting on artificially dyed pearls in another thread. Anyway in a world where most of the Tahitians are not of the best color- why not dye the second or third tier Tahitians? I think it should be disclosed, of course, but I would bet that the dyes would have their own unique stamp and be readily distinguishable to knowledgeble people, just as dyed Freshwaters are.

So far, among my friends, I have only seen the gray Tahitians lacking in overtones and I think I like my 13mm dyed peacock CFWP better as far as complex colors go.
