Great photo, Douglas, though it looked to me like a Salvador Dali' impression!

You've got a point here Perle... It must be my Spanish blood talking...and the "Paranoid Eyes"...my wife tells me I should never -EVER- again do those eyes and scream out: "Here's Johnny!!!" (in a Jack Nicholson style). Says she'll take the babies and run back to her parents...wench!

You're right about the size...but yesterday I left the pearl back home and just wrote the size I tought I remembered it was...and as it is, too many pearls, too many draughts of harrdy ale...love "Pirate Speak" but I need much concentration and today is not my day.

That "Sauron Pearl" (I am actually going to "christen" it with this name) is definitively not for sale. It belongs to Enrique, Manuel and meeeee! This year we have commenced a new tradition: we are collecting at least ONE pearl: the largest, most beautiful baroque, out of a harvest. That pearl will go into a "Cortez Pearl Collection", never to be sold...

Eventually, I will sell tickets and people will be able to go inside a special "Pearl Room" to stay with the Pearls in the collection and do whathever it pleases them most (without hurting the pearls, of course) touch, smell, lick, the sky's the limit... No...I don't think so. The pearls will be placed on an altar, to be cherished by us and our visitors instead. Much finer idea

Sraelp and Boo: I loved your Pirate Prose!

Sorry about the "shivers stiff hook" prose...it did not work out. Tried a variation of "you can prye my pearl from my cold, dead, stiff, fingers"...but with a "hook" for a hand, and the "shivers" means "cold" so that was the idea. Did not hold water I can only begin to fathom all the weird things some of you might have imagined out of it

I actually followed your line of thinking, but I just couldn't fathom how one would hold a pearl in one's hook.... balance it on top perhaps, but that would seem far too risky a method for such a lovely piece of treasure. One rogue wave to throw you off balance, and there goes Sauron over the edge, to sink slowly into the waves forevermore...

While I can understand Slraep's dismay at not being able to cajole you out of your "precious", I think it is a fabulous idea for you to hold on to your most outstanding pieces. That way when the GIA does a tour of your facilities, folks will be able to get weak-kneed at the sight of such a bounty of color and size! (Although we do love you very much for sharing them with us virtually...)

Many thanks to all of those who tolerated my descent into piracy for the day! I just about drove my family nuts, but by gosh, how can you not embrace an annual tradition as fun as that?

Boo, I must admit, I am really going to miss the pirate-speak. You are soooo good at it!

I promise, promise, promise, this is my last pirate post for the year. Yes, Blaire, Boo is just one of the multi-faceted, unbelievably talented people on this forum. It just amazes me all these people with all these talents! All I can do is tie an overhand knot.

Damn. Was it the limerick, Douglas?? I'm not very good with limericks.

I was going to rename "Sauron" as "the eye of Slraep". But I guess I'm just a dismall failure at the talent of wenching. I'm going to have myself a little cry later on....

[waking thread up]

What if a black pearl had a light source inside to show off the 'fisheye' irridescence throughout all nacre layers?

Here's something similar of a larger scale... star dust involved:

Link to source: look for CRL 2688

I was trying to explain black pearls to a colleague, and he found this association in his confort zone...
