Truly awesome! Not just the color of the melo melo, or the sheer number of pieces, but the matching and the design. Someone said on this forum awhile back, something like, For the number of pearls I have and want, I need a more interesting life. I've been sitting here trying to imagine where I could wear something like that and coming up with pathetic answers like the Academy Awards. I guess if you are royalty you'd have lots of opportunities to display such a wonderful piece. I've heard melo melo can fade. Anybody know if that's true? How do you keep them safely in that case? (Please don't anybody be offended by my reference to the Academy Awards. I am in no way saying they are pathetic, just that if I could afford such a piece of art I'm sure I'd have places to wear it!)

Incredibly rare and beautiful, both the pearls and the design. Also appreciate leveling the playing field here vs. some of the fine conch pieces posted. Like conchs, I do believe there is a sunlight discoloration issue with melo-melo—not sure if that also applies to photo flash and TV broadcast illumination at the Academy Awards…

| Who has the story on this piece? And why when I read the words Melo Melo does Donovan run through my head? "They call me Melo Melo."

From Sotheby's catalogue: "DESCRIPTION The necklace composed of fourteen graduated melo pearls, decorated with waves of brilliant-cut diamonds and jadeite cabochons, length approximately 420mm, pendant detachable; and a pair of pendent earrings and ring en suite, clip fittings, the melo pearls measuring approximately 14.25 x 5.44 to 22.13 x 14.99mm, the diamonds altogether weighing approximately 6.15 carats, mounted in 18 karat blackened gold, signed. (3) Accompanied by a signed box" I think it would be possible to dig some more information.

Don't worry about having it, isn't it fantastic just knowing it exists, and that a jeweler was inspired enough to make such a beauty with the pearls ?? About fading, yes it does, it is a " winter" or " evening" jewel, ![]()

The homogeneity of the melo-melo color is astonishing. I'm assuming from the price that certification was done that no dyes were used. Does anyone know? For a high-value piece, in melo-melo as with emeralds, using dyes tempts many a seller. The more orange and the more even the color, the higher the value of a melo-melo. Patches of white like on the 83ct one I own definitely reduce its value. If entirely natural, I'd say the buyer of the set got a major bargain at less than a million dollars! Tom Stern,MD
