Hi knotting gurus,

Is there a formula/guesstimate to calculate how much length the knots will add to an unknotted strand? Obviously there are variables - length of strand, no. of pearls, thickness of thread, single or double knots etc, but for an average 17 inch unfinished strand, do the knots add more or less than an inch? I am knotting up some more of the "klonks" on 30lb powerpro - about 35 pearls in all, with single knots - just wondering if anyone can help..

Thanks again!
Nerida

Hi Nerida,
Once again, we are ships that meet in passing....
Yes, there's a guide on the beader's club somewhere.
Too late for me to look for it now, but if you don't find it, I'll look tomorrow.

Too right.
After a rotten day, weather-wise, and suffering with an ear infection, the painkillers are finally beginning to work so I'm off to get some sleep while I can.

Do a search for Bead Number Wizard. That should help.

Hi Nerida,
you have to do the maths on your own but I strung a strand of 39 large pearls with Power Pro, without clasp the pearls were 46,5 cm with a toggle clasp of 11 mm the finished strand is 51 cm, alas 2" longer than the unstrung pearls.

Here a link that will help.

http://www.pmegio.com/bead.php:)

I just saw that you had gotten the relevant link already.

Thank you for the link, Inge, Gail & Robin. I knotted the pearls today - interestingly Inge with about the same "addage" as you had with yours. I used 41 pearls and wanted a 22 - 23 inch strand for a larger customer - I started with 19.5 inches of pearls (41) and between your example Inge, and the calculator, it all worked out just fine (22.5 inches!). Now I hope she likes them ... these are the same FW klonks that I had in another thread.

it is usually about 2cm less than you need if you are trying to eke out a piece of thread which is too long to just throw away...but you decided to risk it anyway

That is so true, it is funny.

I used to think I was the only one to have to take apart something almost done and start over because I was hoping there was enough thread...........40 knots later, I see there wasn't.

I shouldn't fool with the formula:
the length of the necklace times 4, plus 8-10" for room at the end.

An 18" knotted would require 72" of thread plus 8-10" ---80" in all. Being an American, I have no idea what that is in CM's

Haha - that is funny - I am a novice knotter, and already had that problem a few times!! Maybe that's how I should have measured my necklace!
