Along the same line, I saw in a high end store, 3 MM tourmalines used for the loop, but I can't remember what they looped around. A center drilled stick pearl would work if it's long enough.

And of course, I love my silver nautical monster spring rings, 12MM. Pearl Paradise has a similar clasp in the Sonora in 14kt.
