Hi , everyone !
I am new for this forum . I started to learn something about the pearl jewelry when I was aksed for sourcing and buying pearls for one of my client early last year. ( I am running a sourcing and buying office here in Guangdong , China) .
Then after that , I discovered the more I understand the pearls , the deeper I love them . Eventually, an exciting idea came to me that I must have my own pearl jewelry company , and I need to own my design and style , instead of providing the copy for my clients . I wan to create unique and beautiful pearl jewelries for all the ladies in the world .
Yes. you know ,next, I started to do everything to make my idea come true . I set up the website . Of course it now just can display the items that are existing. Now the problem is how can I make my jewelry outstanding among all the suppliers?. How do I do for exploring new market and getting new clients .? How can I convince others that my company has the R&D ability for pearl jewelry ? How can we find the way out even we are ready for the market ?

I would like to see your comments or suggest for the marketing , and please also visit our website . www.harborsen.com
I would like to appreciate any idea from you . Maybe , you will help me find a way out !

Dear Helen: I read in your post that your provide "copy" to clients. I'm not sure what that means. I do see that at least three of the designs on the front page of your website closely resemble a high-end international retailer even to the point of displaying their signature clasp and the pictures are a spot-on match with those on their website. Granted, I'm a rookie at this wouldn't presume to declare that the products listed on your site are anything other than your own designs, or ones for which you have licenses. But my suggestion would be if you are beginning your own design site, to present your designs alone and leave copying to an ancilliary business.

If all the pictures on the website are actually originals, I would say you did indeed put alot of effort into the website. But plagiarism and downright copyright infringement are very much frowned upon and I have no sympathy for posters who are banned from the largest online pearl resource.

Set your target consumer group and then tailor a sales strategy - wholesale, retail, beaders, pearl collectors etc.

Quality - please follow a set criteria - you need to put this criteria up on your webpage and follow it to the letter. No Chinese downsizing. Calliper readings on size please. I can tell what size pearls are as soon as I see them, so there's no point charging a 7-8 mm price for a strand of 6-7 mm.

Pricing - I hate bargaining, as do most consumers here. I have no idea if you are keen on doing wholesale or retail, but please, just stick to a fixed price. Trying variable profit margins with different people isn't going to get you anywhere online. Sure, there's retail pricing, bulk discounts and then wholesale pricing and again discounts for those.

Actively participating in this forum as a bona fide pearl lover would be one of the best ways to gain exposure. The best publicity is word of mouth. Our vendors here have very solid reputations. There are a few cases where things have gone awry and people have gone AWOL, but it's not common. Consumers do quite a bit of research online these days and most people who want to look up pearl information will find pearl-guide. That's how I got started. Once they get here it's easy to get a feel of who are the active participants and which vendors would suit their needs.

I highly recommend you read Jeremy Shepherd's book on setting up an online business. It's a very easy read and great for beginners. If you start off right it's hard to go wrong. There are many Chinese business practices that I do not agree with, and if you want to go international start right at the beginning.

If I was shopping I'd want close up photos of the pearl surface, length of the piece (especially necklaces or bracelet), what metals are used and price

Some comments on a very practical end regarding your web presence:

Be certain that your web development and design is sound and that all security measures are in place if you intend to do e-commerce, whether retail, wholesale or both audiences. If you offer English language in some areas of the site, it should be available in all of them.

Verify that your website is optimized for the most widely-distributed browsers (IE, Safari, Firefox, Opera to name a few) and that your visual branding and collateral are consistent. These days, most clientèle, especially those interested in fine gems, have a sophisticated eye and high expectations for legibility of any materials. If you display your own copyrighted designs this should be clearly annotated, and any images or designs not produced by you should be clearly attributed.

As far as reputation and gaining an audience I can only speak as a jewelry collector. I buy steadily and always buy real gems and precious metals, typically artisan-made. I follow word of mouth and referrals from trusted jewelers and collectors and have never once gone wrong with that method. Two online merchants with whom I have personally had excellent experiences are Robert Elliott and Carolyn Ehret, both on eBay and both with 100% positive feedback and independent referrals from other jewelers and collectors. So, if you provide products that are exactly what you advertise, (size, quality, metal purity, design) and respond quickly and consistently to your customers then positive word of mouth will help you grow your business.

A few comments from here---

In spite of high speed internet, some of the pages downloaded slowly and parts of the text and photos were not shown.

Photos were small, it was difficult to tell the size of the item, size of the beads or pearls, length of necklace or bracelet.

Some areas did not seem to have prices.

These suggestions are offered sincerely.

Hi Helen
I have seen the upper left photo with the distinctive x pattern clasp before also, though I can't remember where, but it appears one of our resident sleuths remembers where. Many of our members are particularly good at rooting out stolen photos and letting the owners know what they found and where.

If you used photos from someone else's site, you need to take them down immediately to retain your credibility and maybe even your membership, over here...

If you actually have possession of a strand with that clasp- why don't you take an informal picture of it in your hand and put it up here? However if you do have that clasp, you are counterfeiting some one else's design. This is a lose-lose situation anyway I look at it........There appears to be no way out.......

Dear knotty panda , Raisondetre,Cathybear,Heidi,pattye,Caitlin,GemGeek,
Thank you all so much for your sincere comments and suggestions ! I am so moved since you really pay your attention on my web and my post.
I am very very sorry that I did not made a clear introduction of my website .
I need to explain something for that and for your suspects :
1, Those pictures are not originals .They are from different factories , but I was told it’s legal to display them on my website. So I uploaded them on my website .
2, My website is still being modified . and you will see all the information are in English later after some days
3,My aim is to do original design and wholesale , and want to look for business partners worldwide , as we really can design by ourselves .
4, And I was also suggested that do not display the new designs on the website in case that they will be plagiarized soon . And my website seems mainly to be a window for outside world . Well , I may try to display some original design on the website
5, My dream is to set up my own brand in the pearl jewelry industry , if lucky I can make it in my lifetime
I wonder whether the above explanation is clear or not .
So if you have any further suggestions or unclear things to address , please do tell me .
I will appreciate each sincere comments from you !
Thank you all again !
PS: I am not the English native , so maybe I can’t not express myself very clearly , please understand .
I am also trying to improve my English step by step , as like setting my pearl business step by step !

Unless you have written permission from the people or companies who own the copyright on those pictures, it is NOT legal to use the pictures on your website.

You should only use photos that you have the copyright for, or proper permission.

A professional website requires all photos to be original photos owned by the company. Your own professional photography must be the ONLY sources of your images on the site.

If you bought factory images, you can't supply the pictured items. That is a major problem in credibility.

If you want a good website to sell online, you must correct this problem. I will give you 48 hours to take all non-original photos off your website. If you don't I will move this thread and rename it to "www.harborsen.com? No way out!"

That would be Friday about 10 AM Pacific Daylight Savings time.

This what I googled for the name Harbor Seneschal Development Co at the bottom of the opening page of the website.

If you click through the first link you get a company description including these two tidbits: This company has 6-10 employees and makes 2 to 5 million a year. Helen is the senior project manager.

With that kind of money available, it is certainly possible to commission photos of their own pearls.

Also I see her posts to Pearl Guide show up prominently in the search. That means anyone googling this company will find our posts too. That could amount to a lot of lost sales, so I recommend Helen fixes problems with ALL snitched pictures right away.

As I click through the links above I am struck with the photos of bathware, etc and I find that I think this company knows perfectly well how to put their own photos up. Unless ALL the various sites' photos are factory-bought images too..........

Hi Dawn,

Well, I feel a lot of us have a pretty well developed sense of intuition (I don't call it "psychic,") and knew that the website in question was certainly in a state of disharmony, and we sense that before we even "think" that in words---------when we feel inconsistency we learn to not spend time nor money there.
