Hello everyone,

Anyways I have made my first purchase and it's a pearl/pendant (7mm) on a 14k gold necklace with little diamonds for my gf. The lady told me it was a cultured pearl, and expensive one i reckon (300US)

When I look at the pearl, it looks nearly perfect. Its perfectly round, with a very tiny blemish or two when you look closely at it. The glow is a silver/pinkish 3D type of glow and it looks fabulous. Is there any reason to believe its not real? I have done the tooth test, and it feels like fine sandpaper, much different than rubbing a piece of plastic on my tooth.

Pics don't do it justice, and the luster reflections are much clearer in real, but this is the best I have come up with!

Hi Burns959 & Welcome,

A pretty pendant, traditional style, and great start for a pearl wardrobe! Most likely an Akoya pearl. Hope your friend is well pleased! Your photos are pretty good, too! After reading a bit here, we will be curious as to your next purchase!

Why do you doubt it's authenticity?

Thanks people.

The pictures were actually taken by my phone camera. I managed much better with the phone than a regular camera

The reason I doubt its authenticity is because I have read many places mentioning that if a pearl looks nearly flawless, then it's likely a faux pearl. And plus, the lady at the jeweler was only capable of telling me it as a cultured pearl of very high quality. And it's my first pearl purchase!

Or maybe I'm just a bit paranoid.

Most sales people know very little about pearls, other than they're pretty and they make good gifts. That means you need to do the legwork to learn more about pearls. I'd say that whatever kind of pearl it is, it's a good one. I can't believe you got such good photos from a camera phone.

Stick around. This can be addicting and a whole lot of fun!

Blaire's right. Even retailers who have case after case of pearls know diddily squat about pearls. One thing they do know is, faux and cultured. There are some remarkable faux pearls out there. If this is a reputable dealer, and I can see from the overtone on that pearl that it is, your pearl is real. Very pretty.

Pics are good! it does look fabulous! No reason to believe it may not be real at all... you have doen tht "Tooth Test" and it it grainy against your teeth that is the general indicator if it is "real or fake" the only real sure way is to have it x-rayed to see..

depends on the type of Pearl maybe Akoya but many of them have a bead center, mine do and are close to round...

Most B&M sellers know little about pearls only what they have heard or were tought only enough "to get by and make the sale" As long as you are happy with it!

cheers
Ash
