Has anybody used a pearl shortener? Here's the one I'm interested in http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=415.
I was wondering if this shortener would scratch my pearls. If anybody knows of any other pearl shorteners, please let me know.
I have 2 strands of black pearls. One is Tahitian from Elaine and the other is dyed FW baroque from Jeremy. They both have the same length and I want to wear them together as a double strand necklace from time to time. The only way I can think of is to shorten one of the strands using a shortener.

Hi SpaceNeedle,

I have this shortener from PP and it does work beajutifully as long as the pearls are not too large. It says up to 9,5 mm but I get trouble when having pearls larger than 8,5 mm. Then it is almost impossible to close it without scratching the pearl.

However, Jeremy recommended to ask Kirsten if larger shorteners are available and there are other vendors who have shorteners for large pearls, I think a PG:er told me that Rio Grande sells them.

Call them or give them an email and you will find one that suits your pearls. For all the smaller sizes the shortener works well, I have 2 of them, if you have a rope or 2 very long necklaces, You canīt make it with just 1!

Thank you so much Jerin. I will also check with Kirsten if she has one for larger pearls.

Hi SpaceNeedle,

I too have the pearl shortener from PP. It works very nicely with pearls smaller than 8mm. I agree with Inge about having difficulty closing it for larger pearls. I bought a larger one at Bellafindings.com. It is item # 2673 on their website, which currently has no picture nor description when you click on the item.

http://www.bellafindings.com/jewelsc...Category=11640

It must be out of stock. The description on my receipt says 11mmx20mm. Here is the reply I received from Bellafindings.com prior to my ordering:

Hi Cathy,
Item 2673 can be use for an 8-10mm pearls.

Thank you,

James

This larger one works on my 8-9mm pearls. I use it to shorten my strand to 16" when I wear button-down shirt because I have a small neck.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
I bought a dyed black 6-7mm round, not baroque. I gave it to my Mom. I did not know that the dyed FW baroque was available until reading here that some PGers bought them.

This shortener may not work on larger round pearls, but it works with drop-shaped baroque pearls. I used it on 9mm baroque pearls today and it is perfect.

Thank you. I ordered one from your link and this one (http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=1617). I think one of these two should work with my strand.
