Hello fellow pearl lovers.....
I thought it appropriate to start a thread dedicated to the playful and regal spirit of the TIARA !
I have been meaning to share this beauty. Handmade by a dear friend of mine Katja. (she owns Tutto Amiamo Galleria in Petaluma, California.. and is well know for her whimsical designs).
The body of the tiara is 14k rose gold, with 18k yellow gold bezels and 22k yellow gold accents. There are baroque Kamoka pearls, natural wild abalone pearls and Japan Kasumi pearls, "angel skin" coral and a few little diamonds for sparkle. It is a truly magical piece of jewelry. There is also a lapel pin to match (for the groom)!
Just another way to show your love of pearls and make your special day... even pearlier!
I hope this will inspire some of you to consider a pearl tiara for your wedding, or for just lazing around the house :D.. and that the rest of you will share some other photos of examples of your own favorite pearl tiaras.... both real and imaginary!
Cheers, Sarah

Ooooh, aahhhh, gorgeous! Last year I had a garden party themed "steampunk fairies, tiaras optional" - would have fit right in. I must make myself a pearl tiara. I actually would have many occasions to use one. Thanks for the inspiration, Sarah!
Hmmmmm...perhaps to go with my pearly corset I've vowed to make for the 2011 ruckus?

To be horribly, mindcrushingly pedantic, that is a billiment, not a tiara. A tiara sits just on the hairline or thereabouts and is worn horizontally. The bit of kit in Sarah's photo is designed to be worn vertically, like an Alice band, towards the back or crown of the head and stand out like a halo.

Wendy is perfectly right, of course, but it's still a beautiful, whimsical, creative way to use the pearls. I like the matching lapel pin for the groom!

Is the round crown sitting on her head a billiment also, or a different designation? Love these bits of esoterica (correct usage?)!
pearlescence
10-29-2010, 08:07 PM
It is a sort of coronet - a crown-ette. That sort of impractical and probably impossible actually to keep on is popular in fairy tales etc. Queen Victoria often wore a coronet and not a crown. True Crowns are big and heavy and not exactly everyday kit.
Coronets are also crown-ish-s as worn by peers (members of the upper chamber of the UK parliament) and hereditary Lords (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronet)
The whole crowns thing is fascinating
and strict etiquette is that only married ladies can wear a tiara, except on the way to the wedding when a family one can be worn

Kathleen: As a Duchesse... I am sure you understand, "a princess never tells!"
I agree with Pattye.. variety will make this more fun!
I have been mulling the idea around in my head (ha ha, not on it) and was thinking that with out having the tools to solder metal and set pearls, that all other sorts of materials could be used... such as coat hanger wire, and elastic (or materials used for flower arranging). I have not gotten much further than the ideas bubbling around, but I think that as long as it involves pearls and you had fun making it... it will be a worthy and precious contender. Drawings will allow for more variety and less mess and I am really looking forward to this!
Thanks for playing!
Cheers, Sarah

That's so charming and wearable! I have a Granddaughter that would love one like that! Glitter is very much in!! What did you use for a base? Nice of her to model for us, too.

Base is a metal hair band with those comb like "teeth". Pearls and Swarovski on thin (32) metal wire.
Originally it was little fuller and bigger. I made it for her wedding, together with necklace, bracelet and earrings. She looked like a chandelier in my opinion... but when does mothers opinion count ???? She wanted this "look" LoL...

I know Ivona, I know, there, there...my daughter's just 23 and why she'd want to do anything but wash & dry her beautiful curly hair, I don't know! I almost despair. She irons it straight, too. My only hope of seeing it natural is maybe soon, since she's in her first ap't and money is tight...much as we love and defend them, who understands this weird color trend?

I thought I would share these photos of how we made this "tiara"... which in the making of, morphed in a pearl "crown".
I started out with some heavy gauge steel wire (from the hardware store), and measured it around my own head. The hardest part was trying to figure out how to "apply" the pearls, and cover up the ugly wire. We decided to make two lengths of a base to give stability... and that worked well, but now I know that the base wire has to be bigger than your head.. because the more decoration you add.. it shrinks. I had originally envisioned the center piece to sit on and just above the forehead.. but as the tiara shrunk into a crown, the whole piece took on new "visions". For the center piece I took apart an old South Sea shell necklace and attached it with copper wire, I also took apart some fun costume jewelry earrings and harvested the gold vermeil floral bits to frame the pearls. We wrapped lavender color nylon thread around the base wires and threaded all different sorts of pearls between the two base wires. For the finale I pegged and glued in a striking coupling of a natural color metallic free form Chinese fresh water pearl and a lovely Sea of Cortez mabe.
The was just the first attempt here.. I plan to make more of these head pieces.. It was really really fun to make this.. and not half as much fun as it was to watch different people at the Pearl Ruckus try it on. For more photos of that you can visit my blog (http://kojimapearl.com/blog), where I posted my favorites.
The second head piece (which will hopefully STAY a tiara) is already in the works. I hope this will inspire some of you... and remember to allow enough length for the finishing!
Cheers, Sarah

Okay, here we go... My own rules were that the tiara should be made from low cost materials that I already had. The three Tahiti pearls are perhaps not quite within limit but they are not great quality.
I have used copper wire to make the shape, forming the tall parts on the first run through and adding a bit of strength by adding a few more layers of copper at the buttom. The pearls are attached with pinkish silk thread and fixed on the back with clear nail polish. Most of the pearls are small, round, peacock dyed freshwater pearls.

For all of you knowledgable people out there, this is what I'm considering:

My Favorite Natural Pearl Tiara by Imperial
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/joshbaz696/p-guide.jpg
The center pearl resting on the peak of the tiara was coined the “Star of the Celebes”. Celebes is an island in Indonesia that is more recently known as Sulawesi. That particular pearl weighs in at 56 grains. The 170 other pearls range in color from golden, rose, silver blue, Smokey gray and a distinct blue. The total diamond weight is unknown.

Karin- definitely last Kasumi is for a ring - I have to find a right setting..Pink gold maybe.... Hmmmmmmm
Caitlin- glad to hear that I misunderstood your remarque....I couldn't understand why you didn't like those pearls from Sarah... you don't have to like how I set them - this is very individual, but pearls themselves are lovely.......
Pattye - Sunstone is waiting for me to get the right spacers and right idea....I have to be careful how I'll use it... I treasure the strand a lot !!
Isabelle - high carat gold would be the best choice of the setting for those Kasumi... I have to start saving money....LoL...

Here it is: finally I made the necklace with Oregon sunstone from Pattye.
I used two big nucleated metallic baroque pearls that I DRILLED MYSELF(!!... LoL...), one yellowish, one lilac/purple, 6mm metalllic FW and gold filled metal. I'm very happy with the result!

Thank you all... I love your comments (of course).. LoL...
Took me rather long to come up with the design because I was under the stress of not disappointing Pattye by wasting such a lovely gift on a "boring necklace". I knew that one day idea will pop up. It did on Saturday.....
I love the way those roundels catch light and reflect it. I was not able to show it on my pictures. I'm not a good photographer. I wish I had Alex close by to ask him to do the justice to this strand...

It definitely looks like something from antiquity that might have once rested on a mermaid's head or something. With a veil attached it would be wonderful for a beach themed wedding.
