What beautiful pearls and such amazing colors!

Can anyone help me out with this? I cannot seem to find these on Pearl Paradise.

Hello Origami-pearl,

Welcome to the forum!!

Those baroque Akoyas were a special offer only made to members of this forum. Some of us signed up months ago, but you can always send an email to Jeremy to see if there is still room. Another offer will probably be made rather soon, so you may be able in on it. I think the Akoyas were more of an experiment, and many members here just loved the colors. If you search for a thread called "Guess?", you should find the whole history.

Good luck! Oh, and there could always be another strand lurking at Pearl Paradise, so you can always try calling the company and asking. It won't be listed on the site because they weren't publically offered.

Jen

Hi members!

Finally yesterday my strand arrived - at last! As You know I got the strand that Jeremy did match and now I am giving You a little report, pictures come later on.

This strand is really silvercoloured and on a white cloth one can see clearly aqua-green overtones. Some of the pearls do look quite green but most look as if one has coated them with thick silver (the oysters did, of course).

The luster is incredible, once around the neck they really stand out with their luster.
The orient is different on every pearl, the center pearl has rose and green overtones and some of the pearls have a little blue orient, but my screensaver shows the strand much more blue than it is in reality.

The shape is really baroque, some of the smallest pearls have a lovely round shape, the larger ones have patches of extra thick nacre in the form of small bubbles, very charming.

I regret though that I gave up # 135, it was more round and would have been the perfect match to # 100, which in its own way is magnificent - just more baroque.

BTW - no one has so far told us, who the lucky buyer of # 135 is.

I am very satisfied with my strand even though I would have loved more blue in it, as Gemgeeks first strand pic shows for example.
But I can say so much - it really is silver/AQUA and not silver/blue, so it is extra special to me.

Congratulations Jerin! I am really looking forward to seeing pictures of your strand. Silver/Aqua sounds spectacular.

I am glad you love it and were able to get it. That strand is featured in this month's Gems and Gemology as well, page 172 if anyone is interested.

I matched that strand personally while in Xuwen earlier in the year. I actually had a hard time letting that one go. But alas, the strand would not have looked very good on me

You should've posed and taken a photo with it! It's a shame pearl designs are more limited for men. The perks of being a chick! It's a dream to own a featured piece! Congrats to jerin yet again.

Jeremy,

I think this kind of baroque pearls would look smashing even on You guys. I just now did order Gems & Gemology, so I have everything that is about this lovely strand and all the news about the "new" freshwater mussels (hybrids cummingi and Schlegeli)!

Raisondetre and youngster,
thanks again for Your congratulations.

Boo (Debbie),
have You got my PM?

Hi, Inge! No, I have no PM from you in my inbox, although it is not full and I have been receiving them just fine from other folks. Maybe try a resend?

Now that Jeremy is finally in the same timezone, I have to ask, what kind of lighting conditions do you match the pearls in? Just sunlight, or the strong lighting the sorters/matchers use? I found it so hard to get the right lighting for the orient to show when I was photographing them.

Those who missed out, not to worry, There are still a couple small strands left which are not on the website. Just email Mia. They're only 8 mm max though. I don't know if it's just plain sad or pathological I am upgrading to bigger and bigger pearls the more stuff I get. Well, no bigger than 12 mm apart from pendants. I'm just physically too short to pull it off without looking like a doofus.

It is a hot sunny day here in Darwin!

We actually use several different types of light for matching.

In the vault, which is the main matching/workspace we switched the ceiling lights out with full-spectrum, natural lighting. The work benches also have additional lighting. Those lights are made by a company in Germany. I bought them at the Tucson show. They are about $1000 for a single light, but they work very well.

I match Tahitians in my personal office in the morning with indirect natural light. I match both toward and against to get the different overtones matched correctly. The wall behind my desk is all glass to the outside, so I can get a lot of light there.

So in your opinion, what is the best natural light for taking pictures, sunny, direct or indirect light, sunny but in the shadow, cloudy but light, in the morning, in the evening, mid-day ?

thanks a lot

Not sure if people are still interested, but Terry's got a few of the untreated Akoyas here - it usually doesn't last very long and I didn't want to post the direct link as I didn't really ask permission. Hope this helps some.
