Kevin, the Vietnamese legends have the Viet people as descendants of a Sea Dragon and a terrestrial nymph. But seeing as this dragon symbolism originated in China, there most probably is a cross-over of imagery. The imperial city, Hue, has many carved and mosaicked dragons guarding the imperial palace, like gargolyles, a la Chinese style.
Vietnamese people are frequently referred to as the "children of the dragon" in literature.
