It looks like the designer was Ms. Nature, mostly. And the human involved turned the unusual (awkward?) tail of the pearl into a good thing - the pendant reminds me of those little oriental 'pebble' carvings (clouds over a mountain?) or some such. The setting encourages a different look at that pearl.... which is nice.
Now, perhaps the barbed wire bit between the pearls' triangular frame and the chain, could be replaced with a neatly closed jump ring of some kind?

The chain could be looped around the pearls' bale. If the piece were here, I'd wear it on a silk cord instead.
PS. care to share any stats about the pearl? It is quite interesting.
