If these pearls actually oroginated in this same region the strand would most likely be of natural pearls. The Mediterranean Sea has historically been a significant contributor to the worlds natural pearl supply.

Cairo is very near The Red Sea as well. The Red Sea also has mollusks that produce natural pearls. One notable mollusk is the Pinna nobilis, or wing-shell. This is the largest mollusk from the Pinnidae family, and typically produces yellowish, brown and grey pearls.

What color are your pearls? It is possible they come from the Basrah region as well.
