| I can attest that even pure gold scratches pearls. It takes just a tiny bit of rubbing by hand (just did that, intrigued by the possible link between gold 'softness' and pearl damage)... probably weeks worth of spacer-on-pearl friction.
I like seed pearls (under 2mm) for spacers, but that means no knots... no safety against loosing pearls if the strand breaks. I am simply assuming pearl-on pearl is as safe as anything but the silk knots themselves. 'Could be wrong there.
